I was sitting at the table with my head in my hands when they eventually came back. I had a poisonous headache throbbing behind my eyes; Annie would be wondering where I was; it was almost certain that the Chronicle was at the scene, interviewing the nosy woman in the gumboots; Charles would probably never speak to me again for dragging him into all this; and, of course, there was the small matter that I was still potentially the main suspect in a murder case.
âSeems the time of death was well before you broke in,â said Beeston, marching back in.
I sat up. âWhen?â
âNot your concern. Mrs Novak was already long dead by the time you got there â your footprints were still visible, according to Constable Barker, who had the sense to check.â
I was shocked that Mrs Novak had already been poked and prodded over. Somehow, I had expected it to take much longer.
âIs the dog safe?â I asked.
âIâm quite sure the correct animal husbandry procedures have been followed,â said Beeston in quelling tones.
âI think weâve got all we need for now then,â said OâCarroll, getting to his feet. âWeâll be in touch.â
I gathered my coat. I was stranded miles from home, with no buses or trams running.
âOh yes,â OâCarroll said, when I tentatively mentioned this. âI meant to say, DCI Brennanâs on his way. He said heâd pick you up and give you a lift home. Friends in high places, eh?â
Beeston snorted. âI trust none of this will be finding its way into your newspaper,â he said. How could he think a murder wouldnât be on the front page?
âI hope my statement is useful,â I said rather haughtily. âAnd I hope you find out who did such a terrible thing.â
âOh, we intend to,â said Beeston. I didnât believe he had a clue what was going on, but I nodded sagely. I was so relieved to be out of there, Iâd have kissed him, if heâd asked.
I waited outside for Lou. It had stopped snowing and there was the ghost of a moon already hovering above the ruined city.
âHop in,â he said, drawing up in his big black car. I was too exhausted to hop anywhere, but I collapsed into the seat.
âYouâre quite the girl detective, arenât you?â he said. He wasnât smiling. âTwo bodies within a week.â
âI just went to interview her!â I said. âHow could I know Iâd find herâ¦â The image reared up again, the blood and the matted hair, and the smell that I didnât think Iâd ever be able to get rid of, no matter how many handfuls of Annieâs precious bath salts I used.
âFor Godâs sake, though, Edie!â he said tightly. It was hard to square this professional Lou, in his dark coat and hat, driving this big, serious car, with the funny, relaxed man of yesterday, who had distributed crackers and brandy and bonhomie.
âWhoever did her in could still have been in the house, you know that, donât you?â
I had known it, but I didnât want to think about it for long.
